Natural Dog Food: Product Review

by YorkieGoddess on October 30, 2010

Sojos Homemade Dog Food Made Easy

Sojos by Sojourner Farms is a complete dog food mix with real turkey. It is 100% grain free. They advertise that they offer the superior nutrition of naturally-occurring vitamins, minerals and enzymes that you can't get from a cooked, processed pellet. No preservatives. Nothing artificial. Just all-natural, human-quality ingredients.

Ingredients: Sweet potatoes, USDA turkey, whole egg, broccoli, celery, apples, flax meal, pecans, tricalcium phosphate, pumpkin, cranberries, basil, dried alfalfa, ginger root, dried kelp, zinc sulfate, vitamin E acetate, vitamin D2.

Directions: Simply soak it in water for a fresh, home-prepared dog food in minutes.

Pros: Our teacup yorkie puppies liked this food. In fact, one of Dams, Chi, hardly left the bowl. She first seemed to lap up the broth and then finished it all! As you can see in the video, Chi would hardly let Aura get a taste! The product was easy to mix and I liked the freshness of it. However, letting it sit for one hour did not do the trick. I would intermittedly introduce the food to our dogs, and it took about 3 hours before they showed interest. THEN, it was all gone!

Cons: Even though it advertised "in minutes"; our teacup yorkies needed at least 3 hours to warm up to the food. This may be due to a change of consistency in their diet, and the extra time was needed to fully saturate the food particals.

Cost: $21.75 for 2 lbs. plus shipping

I would recommend this product with caveat. Give more time for water absorption. I used filtered water at room temperature. Not sure if hot water would have made a difference.

The Magic of the Labyrinth

by YorkieGoddess on October 23, 2010

Using the labyrinth as a healing tool for pets.  The human race has been using the labyrinth as a healing tool for over 4,000 years.  It is a symbol that has a beginning and an end and is used as a tool to encourage meditation, prayer, healing, or quieting of the mind.  Walking the labyrinth with our pets is a wonderful way in which to share these healing experiences.  Labyrinth walking is among the simplest forms of focused walking meditation, and the demonstrated health benefits have led hundreds of hospitals, health care facilities, and spas to install them in recent years.  My husband built a 5-ciruit labyrinth in our back yard a few years ago, and Kim and I take every opportunity to walk the labyrinth with our puppies and our dogs.  Carrying our just born puppies as I walk the labyrinth creates a connection and strengthens the bond between us.  It is a healing modality we use to instill calmness and healing in our furry friends.  If you ever have the opportunity to visit a labyrinth, please take your furry family member with you (with permission, of course).  For more information on labyrinths, please check out our webpage The Magic of the Labyrinth.

Using Holistic Methods to ease labor pains

Teacup Yorkie resting

As I sit here in dimmed light, I am keeping a close watch on one of our pregnant yorkies, Chi.  She is to give birth any time now to two puppies.  Through tired eyes, and feeling a little grumpy due to lack of sleep (this is my sixth night keeping a watchful eye), I wonder about the holistic methods that we can use for our canine moms to be.  Surely, they enjoy the same tender and caring gestures our human counterparts enjoy.  During carefree days, our yorkies seem to enjoy the holistic methods I employ (music therapy, and  aromatherapy). Playing jazz during our rides in the car, our yorkies seem to enjoy the music just as much as I do.  They are used to it by now, and by associating these sounds to car rides, surely makes going to the vet less of a hassle.  Tonight, extra blankets seem to give her the outlet for necessary nesting.  I surround her with earth colors (brown, beige) so as to ground her, making her feel secure in her surroundings.  I’m awaiting the end phase of labor where I’m sure healing energy work will ease some discomfort.
In keeping with my heart’s mission of raising our yorkies using holistic and healing methods, I turn down the lights, put on some healing music and spray lavender in the air.  I can only hope that when the time comes, Chi will have healthy puppies, and that I have done everything I humanly could do, to help her along the way.
